Hey. I’m Jill.
I’ve never been good at following prescribed paths. I ask too many questions for that. And as young newlyweds, my husband Christian and I asked one question that changed our lives forever:
“Why do we have to do it like everyone else?”
Our quest for the answer has led us down some wild paths, including impulse-buying a neglected farmstead 40 miles away from the nearest grocery store.
Little did we know that old homestead would change everything. We learned to make compost, tend chickens, milk goats, and plant vegetable gardens.
Day by day our confidence grew in tandem with the callouses on our hands. But a deeper transformation was happening as well. As we restored the farmstead, we experienced our own restoration. For the first time in my life, I possessed a deep sense of belonging, both to myself and to this land. I finally felt fully alive.
What started with mason jars and chickens has culminated in a life-changing adventure.
Along the way I’ve realized there’s a much deeper longing driving this modern homesteading movement.
And that’s exactly what I aim to uncover within the writings in this space.
This Isn’t My First Rodeo…
Odds are, you’ve run into me on the Internet before.
I’ve run one of the top homesteading blogs since 2010.
I host the top-rated Old-Fashioned on Purpose podcast.
I wrote a best-selling cookbook that’s currently on its 5th printing.
We ship our grass-finished Wyoming beef all over the USA.
And we recently bought and renovated a historic soda fountain in southeast Wyoming.
But this corner of the Internet isn’t about those things– at least not directly.
In this space, I hope to cut through the noise and write about things I haven’t talked about elsewhere.
